History

Storytellers of Canada (SC-CC) was founded in 1993 as a result of a national meeting in Montreal instigated by Rosalyn Cohen. Since then, an annual national conference has been held in a different location each year across Canada. In 2000, SC-CC was incorporated as a non-profit organization and received its National Arts Service Organization designation.

SC-CC functions as national representative for those involved in maintaining and practising oral traditions in Canada

SC-CC encourages the participation of all peoples, by recognizing storytelling as a common root of all cultures and by making strong, positive efforts towards regional and cultural inclusion.

Since its founding in 1993, the following storytellers have served as National President:

One of the special privileges of our past coordinators, is that once they have officially left office, they are entitled to use the honourific title of "Silly Old Person" and be endowed with a special symbol of their new status. This privilege is bestowed in a special ceremony at the conference following their departure from office. It is a requirement that the recipient of this symbol receive it in person, for obvious reasons.
